If you have watched a friend light up because someone remembered their dog’s name, you know why pet-themed neon signs have become one of the most gifted custom pieces we make. A pet neon sign is not a mug with a paw print on it — it is permanent, glowing decor built around one specific animal.

This guide covers the whole decision: which designs get gifted, how big the sign should be, where it belongs, whether LED neon is safe around a chewer, which power option fits, and what a custom pet sign costs. Everything here comes from our own workshop.

What Is a Pet Lover Neon Sign (and Who Actually Buys One)?
A pet lover neon sign is a custom LED neon piece built around a pet — a name, a breed silhouette, a paw print, or a phrase that only makes sense to someone who lives with an animal. Every sign is made to order: your text, your colours, your size.
Three kinds of buyers order these most often:
- Owners buying for themselves — a name sign above the crate, or a soft-glow piece in the corner where the dog sleeps.
- Gift-givers — birthdays, Gotcha Days, Christmas, housewarmings and, in the hardest moments, sympathy gifts.
- Pet businesses — groomers, sitters, vets, pet boutiques and dog-friendly cafés that want a wall worth photographing.
Gift-givers are the largest group, so the rest of this guide is written from the buyer’s side.
Five Pet Neon Sign Designs That Get Gifted Most
1. Your Pet’s Name in Block or Script Letters
The most requested design, and the one you cannot buy off the shelf — “Milo”, “Luna” and “Cooper” only exist for one household. Block letters read cleanly at small sizes; script suits longer names and softer rooms, but thin cursive strokes read smaller than their stated height, so size up 20–30% if you choose script. See Milo, Luna or Cooper for how a single name sits on a clear acrylic back.
2. Rescue and Adoption Phrases
For adopted animals the words matter more than the name. “Rescue Is My Favourite Breed” and “Who Rescued Who” are the two phrases we cut most often — they say something the owner genuinely feels, and they start a conversation with every visitor. Our Rescue Is My Favourite Breed neon sign is one of our best-selling pet designs.
3. Paw Prints, Noses and Silhouettes
An icon works when the name is too short to fill a wall, or when the gift is a surprise and you are unsure of the spelling. A paw print, a heart with a nose in it, or a breed silhouette can stand alone or sit beside a short phrase — and icons are a natural place for a second colour.
4. Pet Memorial Signs
The most emotionally loaded category: usually the pet’s name with a date. See the ordering advice below.
5. “Welcome All Pets” Entryway Signs
For multi-pet households and anyone who hosts other people’s dogs, a Welcome All Pets neon sign sets the tone before a guest takes their coat off. Buddy Lovers is the two-name version.
How Big Should a Pet Neon Sign Be?
Two rules do most of the work. The 60–70% rule: the sign should fill roughly two-thirds of the space it occupies. The 2:1 wall ratio: on a wall, it should take no more than two-thirds and no less than one-third of the wall’s width. A 48-inch wall therefore wants a sign between 16 and 32 inches wide, with 24 inches the sweet spot.
| Wall or surface | Sign size to order | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Small shelf or bedside (2′ × 2′) | 8″ – 12″ wide | Memorial shelf, bedside table |
| Medium wall (3′ × 4′) | 16″ – 20″ wide | Above the crate, home office |
| Large wall (5′ × 6′) | 24″ – 32″ wide | Living room, entryway |
| Extra large (8′ +) | 36″ – 48″ wide | Grooming salon, pet boutique |
Pet-specific starting points from the orders we ship most:
- Above a crate or dog bed: 16–24 inches — it must read from a sofa 5–8 feet away.
- Above a feeding station: 12–16 inches, because you stand right in front of it.
- Entryway or hallway: 24–30 inches, to read from the doorway.
- Memorial shelf or bedside: 8–12 inches, viewed from about two feet.
Letter height is where most mistakes happen: allow roughly 3 inches of letter height per 5 feet of viewing distance, and 1.5–2.5 inches of width per character. A 24-inch sign fits 10–16 characters on one line, so a long phrase such as “My Best Friend Has Paws” belongs on two lines with a 2-inch gap. Full charts are in our neon sign size guide.
Where Should You Hang a Pet Neon Sign? Five Spots That Work
- Above the crate or bed. Mount the bottom edge 12–18 inches above the crate so it lights the space without shining into the dog’s eyes.
- Over the feeding station or in the mudroom. A small sign above the bowls turns a utility corner into a deliberate part of the room.
- The entryway. Welcome signs belong where the leash lives.
- Your home office. If the cat occupies the desk all day, the wall behind it should say so — 24–30 inches.
- Above the sofa or fireplace. The largest placement most homes use, at 30–40 inches.
Installation is a five-minute job: the sign hangs from pre-drilled holes on the acrylic back with the supplied hardware and plugs into a normal socket. If you rent and cannot drill, ask us about adhesive and hook mounting alternatives.
Are Neon Signs Safe Around Dogs and Cats?
This is the question that stops most buyers — and for glass neon it is a fair worry. LED neon is a different product. Every sign we build uses low-voltage LED strips (12V or 24V DC, the same voltage as a laptop charger) sealed inside flexible silicone tubing on a rigid acrylic back. No glass to shatter, no mercury, no gas, no high voltage.
| Risk | Traditional glass neon | LED neon (Y SIGNS) |
|---|---|---|
| Operating voltage | 3,000–15,000V | 12V or 24V DC |
| Surface temperature | 40–50°C, hot to touch | Room temperature +1–3°C |
| Shatter risk | High — fragile glass tubes | None — flexible silicone |
| Mercury | Present in many tubes | Not used — RoHS compliant |
| Chew or knock damage | Breaks into sharp shards | Bends and survives |
In practice the real risks are boring, and nearly all of them are about the cord:
- Chewing. A puppy will chew anything dangling at mouth height. Route the cable through a rigid raceway or cord clips, or mount the sign at least 5 feet above the floor. A dimmer or timer also lets you switch it off overnight, when chewing happens.
- Pulling. Keep the cord short and clipped so the sign cannot be yanked off the wall.
- Heat. LED neon runs at 25–30°C, roughly 1–3°C above room temperature, so a curious nose is not a burn risk.
Every sign we ship carries CE, UL, RoHS and FCC certification, with documentation on request. For the full breakdown, read are LED neon signs safe.
Plug-In, Battery or USB: Which Power Option Fits a Pet Corner?
| Plug-in | Battery / USB-C | |
|---|---|---|
| Runtime | Unlimited | 6–12 hours per charge |
| Brightness | 400–500 lumens | 250–350 lumens |
| Cord | Yes — needs routing | None |
| Best for | Permanent wall sign, 24/7 glow | Rented flats, crates with no outlet nearby |
| Cost | Baseline | +$10–30 |
For a pet corner that stays up permanently — above the crate, over the bowls, on the living-room wall — choose plug-in: brighter, no battery to remember, never goes flat. Choose battery or USB-C only when there is genuinely no outlet within reach. Most battery models also run on pass-through charging. Full comparison: battery vs plug-in neon signs.
What Does a Custom Pet Neon Sign Cost?
Pricing follows size first, then complexity. Using our published ranges: a 12″ × 8″ text sign runs $80–120; a 16″ × 12″ name sign $100–160; a 24″ × 16″ phrase $140–220; a 36″ × 24″ salon piece $220–350.
| What you are buying | Typical range |
|---|---|
| 12″ × 8″ name sign, single colour | $80 – $120 |
| 16″ × 12″ name plus paw print | $100 – $160 |
| 24″ × 16″ phrase sign | $140 – $220 |
| 36″ × 24″ salon or boutique sign | $220 – $350 |
| Second accent colour | +15% – 30% |
| Battery / USB-C power | +$10 – $30 |
Size moves the number most (doubling the area roughly doubles material cost), followed by the number of separate colours — each needs its own tube run — and complexity: a clean name is cheapest, a detailed breed illustration the most expensive. Pet Memorial Neon Signs: How to Order One That Feels Right
- Keep the text short. A name and a date is usually enough — long tributes read poorly when glowing.
- Choose warm tones. Warm white or soft amber feels gentler than bright blue, and suits a bedroom or hallway.
- Size it small. 8–12 inches, for a shelf or mantelpiece viewed from about two feet.
- Allow for production time. Production is 3–7 business days plus 3–7 days in transit — order three weeks ahead for an anniversary.
If the sign is a sympathy gift, tell us: we will prioritise the proof and keep the packaging discreet.
How to Clean a Pet Neon Sign (Hair, Dander and Drool)
Pet hair is what separates a pet sign from any other: dust and hair settle on the acrylic face and cling to the tubing.
- Unplug first and let it cool for two minutes.
- Dust with a dry microfibre cloth — the type used for glasses. Paper towels scratch acrylic.
- For smudges, barely dampen the cloth with distilled water, wipe along the tubing, then dry immediately. Never spray liquid onto the sign.
- Never use ammonia cleaners, vinegar or bleach — they cloud silicone and damage sealed connections.
- Clean every 2–3 months, monthly if the sign sits near a litter tray or feeding area.
- Keep the adapter clear with about 2 inches of air around it.
Full instructions, including seasonal storage, are in our cleaning and storage guide.
Gift Occasions: Gotcha Day, Birthdays and Housewarmings
- Gotcha Day — pair a rescue phrase with the adoption date.
- Birthday — the pet’s name with the year, in a colour that matches the room.
- Christmas — a name sign stays up all year, which beats anything seasonal.
- Housewarming — a welcome sign for a friend who just moved in with a dog.
- New puppy or kitten — a small sign above the crate.
- Sympathy — a memorial piece, as described above.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pet Neon Signs
Can I put my pet’s name on a neon sign?
Yes — the most common pet sign we make. Send the name, choose a font and colour, and we return a digital proof with exact dimensions before production. Names of up to about eight characters fit a 16-inch sign; longer names work better on two lines or a 24-inch piece.
Are LED neon signs safe if my dog chews?
The sign is safe — 12V or 24V, cool to the touch, no glass, no mercury. The cord is the part to protect: route it through a raceway, clip it to the wall, or mount the sign above 5 feet.
How long does a custom pet neon sign take to arrive?
Production is 3–7 business days, then 3–7 days in transit by express courier — roughly two weeks door to door. Order three weeks ahead for a fixed date such as a Gotcha Day.
What size sign should I order for above a dog crate?
16–24 inches wide is the range most owners choose, read from 5–8 feet away, which calls for letter heights of roughly 4–6 inches. Keep the sign to about two-thirds of the crate’s width.
Can a pet neon sign go outside?
Yes, with the right build. Outdoor signs need weatherproofed, vacuum-sealed connections rather than the standard indoor adapter. Tell us where the sign is going and we will specify the protection level.
Do you offer a discount on more than one sign?
Yes — buy two or more items and 15% is applied automatically at checkout. Many orders pair a name sign for the wall with a smaller memorial or crate sign.
A pet neon sign works as a gift because it cannot be generic. It carries one name, one face, one household — and it stays on the wall long after the wrapping paper is gone. Send us the name, and we will show you what it looks like glowing before you commit.
