Neon Sign Arrived Broken? How to Prevent It

“My blue neon sign came broken in the mail. The seller refunded me, but it was a huge disappointment.” β€” a r/neonsigns collector, +31 upvotes

Shipping damage is the #1 complaint in the neon sign community β€” and it’s easy to see why. Even with “fragile” stickers and foam padding, a standard cardboard box often isn’t enough to protect a delicate sign during transit through multiple sorting facilities.

Whether you’re a buyer ordering a custom sign or a seller shipping products, here’s what you need to know about preventing transit damage.

Why Neon Signs Break in Transit

  • Drop impact: Packages are dropped an average of 7-12 times during standard shipping. Hard impacts crack acrylic faces and silicone tubing at weak points.
  • Stacking weight: Heavy boxes stacked on top can crush thinner signs β€” even those inside boxes.
  • Temperature extremes: Delivery trucks reach 140Β°F (60Β°C) in summer. Heat can soften silicone tubing, making it more vulnerable to bending stress.
  • Corner strikes: Rectangular boxes dropped on corners transfer full impact force to the sign inside.

For Sellers: How to Pack a Neon Sign That Survives

At Yneonled.com, we’ve shipped thousands of neon signs worldwide with a less than 0.5% damage rate. Here’s our packaging protocol:

  1. Double-wall corrugated box β€” never single-wall. The box should be at least 3″ larger than the sign on all sides.
  2. Rigid foam board sandwich β€” place the sign between two sheets of Β½” rigid foam (extruded polystyrene, NOT the crumbly beadboard).
  3. Corner protectors β€” cardboard or foam corner guards on all 4 corners of the foam sandwich.
  4. 2″ minimum air gap β€” fill the remaining space with bubble wrap or expanding foam bags. The inner package must NOT touch the box walls.
  5. Fragile labels (3 sides minimum) β€” top and two largest sides. Bright red “THIS SIDE UP” arrows help but carriers often ignore them.
  6. Insurance β€” always declare the full value.

For Buyers: What to Do If Your Sign Arrives Damaged

  1. Don’t throw anything away. Keep the box, packing materials, and sign exactly as received.
  2. Take photos immediately β€” wide shots of the damaged box, close-ups of the damage, and the sign in situ with the packaging.
  3. Contact the seller within 24 hours β€” most reputable sellers (including Yneonled) offer a damage replacement policy if notified promptly.
  4. File a carrier claim if needed β€” keep all photos and documentation.
